Medieval and Early Modern Latin Sources on Asia

Franciscan Missions (13th–14th c.) & Jesuit Texts (16th–18th c.)

This digital research project presents critical editions of Latin sources documenting European encounters with Asia, from the first Franciscan missions to the Mongol Khans through the Jesuit scholarly exchanges in Ming and Qing China.

Project Priorities

  • Manuscript-based textual criticism
  • Historical linguistic analysis
  • Contextual commentary on Eurasian connections

Project Background

Originally developed from my doctoral thesis on 13th-century Franciscan accounts, this project now incorporates a decade of subsequent research and teaching experience in East Asia.

These editions follow established philological methods while incorporating recent advances in digital approaches to medieval and early modern texts.
